cape town port congestion

Speeding up truck turnaround times at the Port of Cape Town is on the cards after a commitment from Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) to address the requirement for staging in and around port precincts, reports Freight News.

Port manager Mpumi Dweba-Kwetana this morning confirmed the decision to look into staging following a related meeting that included Red Tape Reduction Unit executive and research economist Glen Steyn.

According to Dweba-Kwetana the truck staging meeting had gone well and a decision had been reached that terminals should create space for truck staging.

Terry Gale, chairman of the Western Cape Exporters’ Club, called it a welcome development, adding that a truck booking system similar to the one implemented in Durban was also being considered for Cape Town.

That system, Port of Durban general manager Moshe Motlohi said at the beginning of the month, was proving very successful in taking pressure off precincts at the harbour’s notoriously clogged-up access ways.

“The Durban Multi-Purpose Terminal booking system enables transporters to book delivery slots 48 hours in advance or cancel a booking two hours prior to the time slot, while the private bulk terminal’s truck staging facility at the Old Durban Airport south of Durban requires trucks to be pre-processed before calling at the port,” Motlohi said.

In tandem with proposed truck staging at the Port of Cape Town, it is hoped that the flow of trucks in and out of the port will be substantially improved.

Cape Town will hold a follow-up meeting about truck staging on Friday, 18 September. – Freight News
