Ten videos. Ten dangerous situations. One common factor: cellphone distraction behind the wheel.
These videos show what can happen when a driver’s attention leaves the road. Trucks slam into the backs of vehicles, animals are hit while crossing the road, trucks leave the roadway and overturn, and one frightening incident sees a truck veer towards an innocent bakkie travelling in the opposite direction.
In another video, the driver’s attention is divided between a cellphone and illegal passengers inside the cab.
These aren’t theoretical warnings about distracted driving. They are real examples of how quickly things can go wrong when a driver reaches for a cellphone.

The videos show different crashes and near misses, but they all demonstrate the same basic problem: when your attention is on your cellphone, you aren’t fully focused on driving.
1. The rear-end crash that could have been avoided
One of the videos shows a truck approaching traffic ahead while the driver’s attention is distracted.
By the time the driver notices that the vehicle ahead is stationary or moving slowly, there isn’t enough time to react.
The truck crashes into the back of the vehicle.
The lesson: Traffic can slow or stop in seconds. A driver looking at a cellphone may only look away briefly, but a truck can cover a considerable distance during that time.
2. Seeing the danger too late
Another rear-end incident demonstrates the same problem from a different angle.
The vehicle ahead is already presenting a hazard, but the driver’s attention isn’t where it should be. When the driver finally reacts, the available stopping distance has disappeared.
The lesson: Heavy vehicles need time and distance to stop. Distracted driving removes both.
3. Animals crossing the road
One of the videos shows a driver encountering animals crossing the road.
Animals can enter the roadway unexpectedly, leaving a driver with very little time to react.
A driver who is watching the road has at least a chance of spotting them early and taking evasive action. A driver looking down at a cellphone may only see the danger when it is too late.
The lesson: You can’t react to a hazard you haven’t seen.
4. When the truck leaves the road
Another video shows a truck leaving the roadway before overturning.
A moment of distraction can result in a truck drifting from its lane. Once the vehicle is on the shoulder or beyond the road edge, recovery becomes increasingly difficult.
The lesson: Losing concentration can quickly become losing control.
5. A truck heads towards an innocent bakkie
One of the most frightening examples shows a truck leaving the road and coming dangerously close to a bakkie travelling in the opposite direction.
The bakkie driver has done nothing wrong, yet is suddenly placed in danger by another driver’s loss of concentration.
The lesson: Cellphone distraction doesn’t only put the person using the phone at risk. Innocent road users can pay the price.
6. Cellphone plus illegal passengers
Another video highlights an especially dangerous combination inside the cab.
The driver’s attention is split between unauthorised passengers and a cellphone in hand while the truck is moving.
Driving a heavy vehicle already requires constant concentration. Add people moving around inside the cab and a cellphone demanding attention, and the opportunity for something to go badly wrong increases dramatically.
The lesson: There is no shortage of distractions inside a truck cab. Adding a cellphone can be the distraction that tips the situation into disaster.
7. The road doesn’t wait
Some of the footage shows just how quickly a normal drive can turn into a crash.
A driver can be travelling along apparently safely, glance at a cellphone and then look up to find that the road situation has completely changed.
A vehicle has slowed. Traffic has stopped. An animal has appeared. Another road user has moved across the road.
The lesson: Driving requires continuous observation, not occasional checks of what’s happening ahead.
8. A few seconds can be enough
It is easy for drivers to convince themselves that they are only looking at the phone for a second.
But a second becomes several seconds very quickly when reading a message, checking a notification or typing a reply.
At highway speeds, those seconds translate into metres travelled without the driver’s full attention on the road.
The lesson: There is no such thing as a harmless glance when you’re driving a heavy vehicle.
9. When distraction becomes a near miss
Not every cellphone-related incident ends in a crash.
Some end with a lucky escape.
But a near miss should not be viewed as proof that the driver’s behaviour was acceptable. It should be viewed as a warning that the next time, there may be nowhere to escape.
The lesson: Getting away with distracted driving once doesn’t make it safe.
10. The phone can wait
The final video adds to the same uncomfortable picture seen throughout the collection.
Different circumstances. Different roads. Different hazards.
But the same basic problem — a driver’s attention is not where it needs to be.
The lesson: Whatever is happening on the cellphone can wait until the truck is safely parked.
Why cellphone distraction is especially dangerous in a truck
Driving a truck isn’t like driving a small car.
A heavy vehicle needs considerably more distance to stop and can take longer to respond to a developing hazard. It also occupies more road space and can cause devastating damage if it leaves its lane.
That makes constant attention essential.
A cellphone can take your eyes away from the road, your hands away from the steering wheel and your mind away from the driving task — sometimes all three at once.
And these 10 videos demonstrate the consequences.
The cellphone can wait. The road can’t.
There will always be another WhatsApp message.
Another call.
Another notification.
Another Facebook post.
None of them is more important than getting safely to your destination.
For professional truck drivers, the responsibility is even greater. Every time you climb into the cab, you are sharing the road with motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and other truckers who are relying on you to keep control of your vehicle.
Put the cellphone down before you start moving.

Because the few seconds you spend looking at a screen could be the seconds that change everything.
