A devastating bus crash on the N1 between Trompsburg and Edenburg in the Free State has claimed the lives of 12 people and left more than 60 others injured.
The crash happened at approximately 9:30pm on Thursday when a Munenzva bus towing a trailer, travelling from South Africa to Zimbabwe, lost control and overturned.
Emergency services, law enforcement officers and disaster management teams rushed to the scene and worked throughout the night to rescue passengers trapped in the wreckage and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.
According to the Free State Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport, 65 injured passengers were taken to Albert Nzula Hospital, while one critically injured patient was transferred to the Pelonomi Hospital Trauma Unit.
Authorities said four passengers sustained minor injuries, while 62 suffered serious injuries, highlighting the severity of the crash.
Free State MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport Jabu Mbalula expressed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.
“On behalf of the Free State Provincial Government, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in this tragic accident. To those injured, we wish you a speedy and full recovery. This is a devastating loss, and our thoughts are with all those affected.”

The department also praised the coordinated efforts of emergency medical services, traffic officials, police and disaster management personnel who responded to the scene and assisted victims during the overnight rescue operation.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Authorities have once again urged motorists, particularly long-distance bus and truck operators, to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, obey speed limits, avoid driver fatigue and comply with all road safety regulations before embarking on long journeys.
As investigations continue, the N1 crash serves as another stark reminder of the devastating consequences of serious road accidents on South Africa’s major transport routes.
