Tragedy struck in northwestern Nigeria when 153 people were killed and dozens injured after a fuel tanker exploded along the Jigawa state expressway.
The horror unfolded on Tuesday night when the tanker overturned, sparking a deadly chain of events.
According to police spokesperson Lawan Shiisu Adam, the disaster began when local residents rushed to the overturned vehicle to collect the fuel.
“The residents were scooping up fuel when the explosion happened, leading to a massive inferno,” he told SA Trucker.
The tanker, which had been travelling from Kano state, crashed after attempting to avoid a collision with another truck near the town of Majia.
The spilled fuel drew a crowd, and moments later, a catastrophic explosion claimed over 150 lives. Authorities fear the number may rise as more bodies are recovered.
Emergency services and local hospitals in Ringim and Hadejia towns were flooded with wounded, with at least 50 victims receiving treatment.
Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima expressed deep sorrow and called for an immediate safety review, while the government sent aid to the area.
Unfortunately, tanker accidents like these are far too common in Nigeria, where poor road conditions, reckless driving, and unsafe vehicles have led to numerous tragedies.

Just last month, another fuel tanker explosion in Niger State killed 48 people. In 2020 alone, over 1,500 fuel tanker crashes were reported, resulting in hundreds of deaths.
Fuel shortages in Nigeria’s ongoing economic crisis have made fuel even more valuable, often leading residents to risk their lives siphoning from crashed tankers.
It’s a dangerous gamble, and sadly, this latest explosion serves as a harsh reminder of just how costly that risk can be.
