18 people have been killed in a horrific multi-vehicle crash on the N1 between Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka in the Western Cape.
The Western Cape Mobility Department has confirmed that the collision happened at approximately 11:30pm on Sunday, 13 September, involving two minibus vehicles and a station wagon.
A total of 18 fatalities have been confirmed, while three other people sustained serious injuries.
Emergency and traffic teams remain at the scene dealing with the aftermath of the crash.
The N1 is currently closed in both directions and motorists are warned to avoid the area where possible.
According to the Western Cape Mobility Department, the only available alternative route is via Prince Albert Road Station, taking the R407 towards the N12 and then continuing along the N12 towards Beaufort West.
This diversion adds approximately 200km to the journey.
Long-distance truck drivers travelling through the area should plan accordingly and consider stopping at a safe location rather than approaching the closure and becoming trapped in the backlog.
