24/7 Stop-and-Go on Vanrhyns Pass as SANRAL Starts Roadworks Ahead of Hantam Meat Festival

Nieuwoudtville – Truckers and motorists planning to use the R27 through Vanrhyns Pass must brace for significant delays, as SANRAL has announced round-the-clock Stop-and-Go operations to allow for special maintenance on the pass.

According to the official notice from contractor Roadmac Surfacing Cape, work will cover the section between KM 42.6 and KM 41.0, stretching from the Northern Cape/Western Cape border (KM 41.12) to Calvinia (KM 69.82). The project is scheduled to run from Monday, 25 August 2025 until Friday, 17 October 2025.

Stop-and-Go Locations

  • Stop & Go 1: Top of Vanrhyns Pass (Nieuwoudtville side)
  • Stop & Go 2: Bottom of Vanrhyns Pass (rest area)
  • Transition Zone: Active work area

The Stop-and-Go points will be manned 24 hours a day, with all vehicles being stopped at both the top and bottom of the pass. A traffic safety escort vehicle will guide batches of vehicles through the work zone, with motorists warned to expect waiting times of up to 45 minutes.

Key Local Update

The Public Relations Officer of GPF Nieuwoudtville, M. Schenck, confirmed that roadworks will take place from 25–28 August 2025, pause briefly, and resume from Tuesday, 2 September until approximately 15 October 2025. This period coincides with the Flower Season and the Hantam Meat Festival, meaning heavy congestion is expected.

Importantly, the entire stretch of Vanrhyns Pass, from the compulsory Heavy Vehicle Stop at the top to the bottom rest area, will be affected by the Stop-and-Go setup.

Special Arrangements

  • 24-hour Stop-and-Go will remain in force for the duration of works.
  • Heavy vehicles will be prioritised when passing through.
  • Traffic safety vehicles will escort all vehicles through the construction zone.
