5 killed in R61 tipper truck crash with police van

Five people, four police officers and a civilian, died when the double cab police bakkie they were travelling in collided head-on with a tipper truck on R61 in Ngcobo on Sunday afternoon.

The truck driver and his passenger were seriously injured while from the bakkie there was no survivor.

The tipper truck with two occupants was driving towards Engcobo, while Nissan double cab with 5 occupants, heading towards Mthatha when they collided at Ngxogi.

Eastern Cape Department of Transport wrote on their Facebook page that it was yet another head-on collision, the 3rd in as many weekends to claim lives.

In the first one which happened on 10/04/2021, Five people lost their lives while nine sustained injuries after two vehicles collided head on in Mqanduli at Dosi location near Xhorha.

And, on 17/04/2021, all seven occupants of a Toyota Avanza died in a head-on collision involving a truck on the N2 road between Dutywa and Butterworth.
