As South Africa marks Women’s Day, the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, took an opportunity to honour the courage and contribution of the women who serve within law enforcement.

Duma joined female law enforcement officers on the frontline as they led a special Women’s Day road safety operation in Durban.

Under the banner of Zero Tolerance, No Nonsense and Alufakwa, the female-only managed multidisciplinary roadblocks aimed to inspire hope for a better future through the guidance and leadership of women in law enforcement.

Duma praised the officers for their firm yet professional approach, saying their work sends a strong message to lawbreakers. “Female-only managed multidisciplinary roadblocks are part of a Zero Tolerance, No Nonsense and Alufakwa campaign,” he said.

During the operation, female officers delivered the following results:

  • 2 motorists arrested for drunk driving
  • 3 motorists with outstanding warrants of arrest locked up
  • 863 vehicles stopped and inspected
  • 143 motorists charged for various offences
  • 16 vehicles suspended from the road due to unroadworthiness

In the spirit of Women’s Day, Duma also handed over gifts to female motorists at the roadblocks, commending them for safe driving and setting an example on the province’s roads.

“This is about more than enforcement — it’s about building a culture of safety and respect on our roads,” Duma said.
