At least one person lost their life following a fiery collision between a light motor vehicle and a heavy-duty truck on the N3 southbound at Shongweni on Friday morning.
According to information from ALS Paramedics, the crash occurred on the Durban-bound carriageway and ended in absolute devastation. The light motor vehicle reportedly collided with the truck under circumstances that are still under investigation.
Following the impact, the car burst into flames, leaving little chance of survival for its occupant or occupants.
Emergency responders arriving on scene were met with a fully engulfed vehicle, with the blaze spreading rapidly.
Paramedics confirmed that at least one person was fatally injured in the incident. The exact number of casualties has not yet been officially confirmed.
The truck involved in the crash did not remain on the roadway. It is believed the impact caused the driver to lose control, resulting in the truck leaving the road and plunging down the embankment, crashing into the bush below the highway.
The condition of the truck driver has not yet been made public.
ALS Paramedics confirmed that the N3 southbound towards Durban was completely closed to traffic to allow emergency services, fire crews, and law enforcement to safely access and manage the scene.
Motorists experienced significant delays as traffic was brought to a standstill while rescue and recovery operations were underway.
Truckers and motorists are urged to be patient and to follow instructions from traffic officials on scene. Alternative routes are advised until the roadway is declared safe and reopened.
