ATDF-ASA backs planned national truck drivers shutdown on 30 May 2026

A planned nationwide shutdown by South African truck drivers on 30 May 2026 is gaining momentum after the All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied South Africa (ATDF-ASA) publicly declared its support for the action.

The shutdown call, which is circulating widely on social media, raises concerns around the employment of foreign drivers in the trucking industry, regulation of the sector and the implementation of the AARTO demerit point system.

According to ATDF-ASA Secretary General Gugu Sokhela, the organisation supports any movement that seeks to address long-standing issues affecting South African truck drivers.

Speaking to SA Trucker, Sokhela said the organisation would stand with drivers whenever action aligns with concerns ATDF-ASA has consistently raised over the years.

“If anyone takes action to address concerns that we have always raised, we automatically support them because the struggle continues,” Sokhela said.

The unsigned poster being shared online calls for a shutdown on all national routes across South Africa on 30 May 2026.

The message reads:

“South African drivers, we as South African drivers have called a shutdown on all national routes on the 30th May 2026 due to the following reasons:

  • Foreign drivers in the trucking industry
  • Regulating of the trucking industry
  • The AARTO demerit point system

It’s about time the GNU takes South African drivers serious.

Aluta Continua.”

While the original organisers behind the shutdown call remain unclear, the announcement has already sparked discussion across the long-distance trucking sector, especially among drivers operating on major freight corridors such as the N3, N1 and routes linked to the Durban Harbour logistics network.

In an official memorandum dated 20 May 2026, ATDF-ASA confirmed that it fully supports the planned 30 May shutdown and also announced plans for its own nationwide shutdown on 30 June 2026.

The organisation said the trucking industry had reached a “breaking point” regarding the employment of foreign drivers and called for action to protect job opportunities for South African citizens.

The memorandum stated:

“ATDF ASA has officially reached the decision to support the national shutdown called by South African drivers for 30 May 2026. We stand in full agreement with the grievances raised and offer our total support to the movement.”

ATDF-ASA further urged drivers and supporters to ensure that all demonstrations remain peaceful and disciplined.

“Our industry has reached a breaking point regarding the employment of foreign drivers, and we are taking a stand to protect the livelihoods of local citizens,” the organisation said.

The organisation also called for a “total shutdown of all national routes across South Africa” on 30 June 2026 as part of its own planned action.

At this stage, government departments, freight industry bodies and transport authorities have not yet officially commented on the planned shutdowns.

The developing situation is expected to be closely monitored by transport operators, fleet owners, law enforcement agencies and thousands of motorists who rely on South Africa’s major freight routes daily.
