Bakers SA Leads the Charge with South Africa’s First Electric Logistics Fleet

In a major step towards sustainable transport, South African logistics powerhouse Bakers SA has introduced the country’s first electric trucks to its fleet of over 1,000 vehicles.

The roll-out, achieved in collaboration with Stellenbosch-based EV specialist Zimi Charge, marks a turning point in local logistics, showcasing both the environmental and operational viability of electric vehicles (EVs) in large-scale operations.

Bakers SA has integrated Mercedes-Benz’s eActros 300L 4×2 model and the eSprinter into its fleet, supported by Zimi’s advanced charging infrastructure.

A 120kW Zimi DC charger installed at the company’s Midrand depot ensures efficient turnarounds for the electric trucks. This charger, managed by Zimi’s cutting-edge Zeus software, tracks energy consumption, carbon emissions, and cost savings in real-time.

“We have significantly reduced our environmental impact while enhancing operational efficiency,” said Bakers GM Luqmaan Hansa.

The move follows Bakers’ earlier trials of the Mitsubishi Fuso eCanter and signals a broader commitment to green transport.

Olaf Petersen, Daimler Truck South Africa’s VP of sales and marketing, praised Bakers as trailblazers, saying, “They set a powerful example for others to pursue sustainable transport technologies.”

Zimi CEO Michael Maas revealed that Bakers has tested three EVs and now owns one, with plans to transition more of its fleet to electric as savings and feasibility studies continue to yield promising results.

This landmark deployment reinforces South Africa’s potential to embrace cleaner transport solutions, paving the way for a greener future in the logistics sector.
