Bakwena Postpones Launch of Contactless Toll Payments on N1N4 Route

Motorists travelling on the N1N4 route under Bakwena’s management will have to wait a bit longer for the convenience of tap-and-pay at toll gates.

Bakwena Platinum has officially announced that the launch of its contactless toll payment system has been delayed to the last quarter of 2025.

Originally expected sooner, the new system aims to streamline toll transactions with modern payment technology, but according to Bakwena, more time is needed to finalise implementation and ensure a secure rollout.

The upcoming contactless system promises greater security, allowing real-time payments while your bank card or device stays in your hand – no more handing over cards to toll operators. That’s a win for both speed and safety.

Once it goes live, road users will be able to pay tolls using:

  • Contactless-enabled EMV debit or credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, etc.) from all South African banks
  • NFC-enabled smartphones and smartwatches linked to virtual cards
  • Mobile payment apps like Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Google Wallet
  • Other SA bank-compatible tap-and-pay apps

For those not keen on tech or without contactless cards, don’t stress – cash and SANRAL e-tags will still be accepted.

In fact, Bakwena encourages tag use, calling it the fastest and most secure option since it doesn’t require stopping or handing anything over.

Currently, debit cards are still not accepted at Bakwena toll plazas. The existing payment methods remain:

  • South African credit and fleet cards (magstripe only)
  • Cash
  • SANRAL e-tags

While the delay might be frustrating for some, Bakwena reassures road users that the new system, once in place, will bring a smoother and safer tolling experience.
