Five people, including a five-year-old child, were killed in a horrific crash on Rookdale Road near Bergville on Sunday morning. The tragic accident has left the local community in mourning and the authorities searching for answers.
Emergency teams rushed to the scene in the Okhahlamba Local Municipality after reports of a multi-vehicle collision, where one of the vehicles was found in flames. One victim was burned beyond recognition.
Search and rescue units, along with firefighters, worked tirelessly to recover the bodies. The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation, and the identities of the deceased have not yet been officially confirmed.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life.
“We express our heartfelt condolences to the affected families,” Duma said. “A team from my office and the department has been dispatched to support the families and assist with identifying the victims.”

Duma stressed that the department will walk the journey with the grieving families, including helping with funeral arrangements.
“Our priority is to ease the burden on their shoulders. Every family has unique needs, and we will work closely with them throughout the week,” he added.
Duma also extended well wishes to those injured in the crash and offered comfort to those left behind.
“May the souls of the departed rest in peace.”
