Two determined young men from Greenfields are walking 600 kilometres from Gauteng to Durban to raise funds for a youth skills development centre, but their journey has now turned into a serious test of endurance.
Thokozani Basana and Zama Nobevu set off from Greenfields on 22 October 2025, hoping to raise R350,000 to build a community centre that will empower the youth with practical skills. Now, on day seven, the pair is struggling under the blistering heat and worn-out shoes as they make their way along the N3.
“The sun is too hot for us,” one of them shared over the phone, clearly exhausted. “Our shoes are also slowing us down. We are determined, but our bodies are being tested.”
The walkers are now pleading for public assistance to help them finish what they started. They urgently need:
- Sturdy walking shoes
- Hats, sunscreen, and long-sleeved cooling gear
- Water and sports drinks
- Financial support to reach their R100,000 initial target
Those able to assist can contact their coordinator, Monica Colile, on 063 481 5396 to arrange drop-offs or donations.

Despite the harsh conditions, the duo’s spirits remain strong.
“We are doing this for the children of Greenfields,” said Zama Nobevu. “Every painful step is for that youth skills development centre. We cannot give up now.”
Local community leader Sir Clifford Mohau has been supporting them with logistics, food, and accommodation plans in Durban. He praised their courage and appealed for urgent help from the public:
“These young men are heroes, but even heroes need support. Their journey is tougher than expected. Let’s rally behind them.”
Their route has taken them from King Mohlala Road in Greenfields, through Sky City, along Nigel Road (R550) to Heidelberg, and now down the N3 toward KwaZulu-Natal.
Each step they take brings them closer to Durban — and closer to proving that with community backing, dreams really can walk themselves into reality.
