Blizzard-Like Storms, Heavy Winds, and Snow to Hammer KZN This Weekend

A serious cold front is barrelling into KwaZulu-Natal this weekend, and truckers need to gear up for some hectic driving conditions. The SA Weather Service has warned of blizzard-like storms, with heavy winds, rain, and even snow on the cards – especially around Van Reenen’s Pass on the N3. Ja, guys, it’s gonna get wild out there.

If you’re running loads on the N3, especially near the Drakensberg or heading inland, expect snow and possible road closures. The authorities are already warning of disruptions at Van Reenen’s. You don’t want to get stuck up there without warm clothing or spin out on black ice.

The winds won’t be playing nice either – strong damaging gusts are expected throughout southern KZN and the northern Eastern Cape. For tautliner drivers, that’s your cue to tighten those straps and maybe even delay if you’re running empty – side winds can flip a rig like it’s nothing.

If you’re near the coast, don’t think you’re off the hook. Gale-force winds are expected to hammer small harbours and ports, so those hauling containers from Durban Harbour should expect delays and use extreme caution. Big waves up to 6 metres high are forecasted – not ideal for shipping logistics either.

Also, don’t light fires near the road – veld fires could spread fast with these wind speeds. Keep your eyes peeled, drive with your lights on, and maintain bigger following distances than usual.

We know truckers are used to pushing through rough conditions, but safety must come first. If you’re unsure, park off until the worst passes. Rather late than never.

Stay safe, keep warm, and check back with SA Trucker for road updates as this cold front hits.
