Sixteen people have been confirmed dead following a devastating bus crash on the N1 near Touwsrivier in the Western Cape during the early hours of Thursday morning.
According to the Western Cape’s Chief Director for Traffic Management, Maxine Bezuidenhout, the bus, carrying just over 70 passengers, overturned shortly before 1am. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Emergency services responded to the scene and continue to assist with recovery operations and traffic management. Authorities have confirmed that two other passengers sustained serious injuries and were taken for medical treatment.
A stop-and-go system remains in place on the N1 while emergency personnel clear the scene and investigators work to establish what caused the crash.
Motorists travelling through the area are urged to expect delays and exercise caution.
