In a shocking development, foreign nationals using Capitec Bank accounts, including Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP) holders, are reporting that their accounts have been frozen.
Numerous account holders have shared their frustrations with SA Trucker, alleging they were not warned about the abrupt measure.
Affected individuals claim they are able to log into their accounts via the Capitec app, but they cannot perform any transactions.

Additionally, their bank cards have stopped working, leaving many stranded without access to their funds.
One account holder, who was on holiday and attempting to return to Durban, recounted their ordeal:
“I was trying to pay for a bus ticket when my card just refused to work. I had to use the R100 I had left for an Uber to get back home. Now I’m stuck, waiting for answers.”

Several account holders have sent screenshots to SA Trucker, showing error messages and transaction failures.
The lack of communication from the bank has only fueled confusion and panic.
In response to queries on X, Capitec advised those affected to visit their branches to get help.
Hi @frances_hobden, thank you for reaching out. Zimbabwean permit holders whose exemption permit expired have been offered an extension until November 2025. If your account has been paused, please visit a Capitec branch with your permit to be assisted.
