Bridge Collapse Leads to Road Closure Between Carolina and Chrissiesmeer

Road P177, which runs between Carolina and Chrissiesmeer, has been closed to traffic following a bridge collapse in the area between the R33 and N17.

The Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality announced the closure of the P177 route on Sunday 29 December 2024 deeming it unsafe and advised motorists to avoid the area until further notice.

The collapse, which occurred last night, has left the bridge structurally compromised, prompting immediate safety concerns.

The municipality issued a statement confirming the closure, noting that the road would remain shut until necessary inspections and repairs are completed.

“The safety of all road users is our top priority,” said the municipality. “We will continue to provide updates as work progresses.”

While the exact cause of the collapse is still under investigation, the disruption is expected to cause significant delays for those relying on this route.

Motorists are being advised to use alternative roads and follow detour signs to avoid the area.
