The reconstruction of the bridge on the P177 route between Carolina and Chrissiesmeer is advancing smoothly and has now entered its advanced construction phases. This follows the sudden structural failure of the original corrugated metal culvert bridge that led to the closure of the road in late December 2024.
During a site inspection on Tuesday, it was confirmed that significant progress has been made on the in-situ construction of the new bridge. The upgraded structure, designed with enhanced structural capacity, durability, and long-term resilience, will replace the outdated infrastructure that previously served as a vital link for local and long-distance traffic.
This project is part of a larger infrastructure recovery initiative, focusing on the accelerated replacement of Armco culverts as part of the Provincial Armco Culvert Replacement Programme. The aim is to improve the safety and reliability of critical roads across the region.
While the P177 route remains temporarily closed to allow uninterrupted construction, there is optimism regarding the pace of progress. The local authorities are working diligently to ensure that the bridge will be completed as soon as possible.
Once construction is finalized, the new bridge will restore full connectivity for road users travelling between the Msukaligwa and Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipalities, once again allowing access to the Chrissiesmeer route.
Motorists are urged to continue using the designated detour routes, and local officials assure that regular updates on the construction’s progress will be provided.
