Shocking dashcam footage showing two buses allegedly involved in a dangerous high-speed confrontation on a public road has surfaced online, raising serious concerns about passenger transport safety and reckless driving on South African roads.
According to the timestamp visible on the video footage, the incident allegedly took place on 18 May 2026.
The video, filmed from a rear-facing camera mounted on one of the buses, begins with another bus following dangerously close behind. Within seconds, the situation escalates as the trailing bus aggressively tailgates the recording vehicle while attempting to overtake.
Instead of slowing down or giving way, the driver of the recording bus appears to maintain speed, with both vehicles continuing at high speed in what many online users are calling a road rage incident or an illegal street race involving public transport vehicles.
At the beginning of the footage, the dashboard display on the recording bus shows a speed of approximately 74km/h. However, as tensions escalate between the two drivers, the speed steadily climbs.
By the end of the video, the recording bus is travelling at a staggering 115km/h.
The most alarming moments occur when the overtaking bus repeatedly leaves the roadway and drives along the shoulder lane in an apparent attempt to pass. During these dangerous manoeuvres, the bus narrowly misses pedestrians on at least two occasions.
In another tense moment captured on camera, the side mirror of the overtaking bus appears to strike the other bus during the high-speed battle for position. Despite the contact between the two heavy vehicles, neither driver stops.
The footage also shows the overtaking driver having to navigate around potholes while travelling at high speed on the shoulder. A loss of control at that speed could have resulted in a catastrophic crash involving pedestrians, passengers, or oncoming traffic.
It remains unclear where exactly the incident occurred or whether any passengers were on board at the time.
The video has sparked outrage online, with many motorists questioning the conduct of professional drivers entrusted with transporting members of the public. Others have called for authorities to investigate the footage and identify those involved before lives are lost.
Road safety experts have repeatedly warned that speeding, aggressive overtaking, tailgating, and road rage remain among the leading causes of serious crashes in South Africa.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether an official investigation has been launched into the incident.
Geolocation context from footage (as indicated by visible coordinates):
The coordinates embedded in the video metadata suggest the incident likely took place in southern Mozambique, along the coastal inland corridor. The area appears to fall within Inhambane Province, in the broader region between Inharrime and Maxixe, depending on coordinate rounding and interpretation.
