South Africa’s trucking and taxi communities are mourning the loss of Buti Johannes Mkhonza, founder of BJM Trucking and BJM Coaches, who passed away on Tuesday following a brief illness.
Known for building one of the most extensive passenger and trucking fleets in the country, Mkhonza was regarded as a visionary entrepreneur and one of the most prominent figures in South African transport.
For those who came up through the taxi industry, Mkhonza is a well-known name, recognized for his leadership and larger-than-life influence, especially in Gauteng and Mpumalanga.
Starting as a taxi driver in 1998, he expanded his reach, growing his business to include over 150 taxis, 80 buses, 30 minibuses, and eventually 15 side tipper trucks under BJM Trucking.
Though he was primarily known as a powerhouse in passenger transport, his trucking fleet brought him into broader logistics, with side tipper trucks operating throughout South Africa.
The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO), where Mkhonza once served as Gauteng chairperson, confirmed his passing and expressed deep sadness at the loss of a remarkable leader.
“We have lost an inspiring figure whose vision uplifted countless people in our industry,” said SANTACO President Motihabane Abnar Tsebe.
Known for championing community-focused initiatives, Mkhonza was a fierce advocate for economic empowerment within the taxi industry, driving initiatives like stokvels to build financial security for drivers and operators.
Tributes have poured in from those whose lives he touched directly.
Youth activist Vuyolethu Sibiya remembered Mkhonza’s unwavering support for his education, saying, “He was a generous, approachable man who transformed so many lives.”

Social media has been abuzz with condolences from former colleagues, drivers, and community members, praising Mkhonza for his dedication to helping others.
For the truckers who might know BJM Trucking more than Mkhonza’s legacy in the taxi industry, he was an entrepreneurial figure who extended his vision beyond passenger transport.
While his trucks may not be as widely recognized as his taxis, Mkhonza’s approach to fleet management and community upliftment is something anyone in the industry could respect.
A memorial service will be held in his honour this Thursday at Gallagher Estate, Midrand, where friends, colleagues, and industry figures will gather to celebrate his life and legacy.
