Mamelodi Sundowns have their Gods to thank yesterday after they were recalled into the CAF Champions League. This was necessitated by the suspension of Congo’s AS Vita Club.
Masandawana have been thrown into Group B, along with Algerian side ES Setis, Zamalek of Egypt and Enyimba of Nigeria.
Vita have been accused by CAF of using an uneligible player, Idrissa Traore in the preliminary Champions League matches.
Downs were astonished to learn of the decision, with Masandawana fans having lost hope on an form of African glory. Having lost on away goals rule to Ghanain Madeama SC tied at a 3-3 aggregate scoreline in the Confederation Cup.
Traore was allegedly on Caf Disciplinary Board suspension when AS Vita fielded him. He had only served one match ban out of the prescribed four.
Downs got to be the benefactor because the replacement would be the last team Vita eliminated before qualifying for the group stages. They had argonisingly lost to Vita on away goals rules after an aggregate score of 2-2.
Head coach Pitso Mosimane, Manqoba Mngqithi and Rhulani Mokwena convened an urgent meeting to devise plans to tackle the surprise campaign.
