Cape Town Container Terminal Welcomes New RTGs in Major Upgrade Project

The Cape Town Container Terminal (CTCT) has kicked off a major upgrade with the arrival of the first batch of 28 brand-new rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs), signalling a big step forward in improving efficiency and reliability at the port.

The new RTGs, supplied by renowned original equipment manufacturer Liebherr, boast cutting-edge features such as advanced anti-sway technology and the ability to operate in winds of up to 90 kilometres per hour — a key benefit given Cape Town’s notorious gusty conditions.

Transporters have always complained about the inability of the port to operate in windy conditions, a concern which the port is trying to address with the latest acquisitions.

According to Transnet Port Terminals (TPT), Liebherr has completed offloading all the parts, and assembly and commissioning are now underway. This process is expected to take up to five months before the cranes are officially handed over for operational use.

This upgrade forms part of the port’s ongoing efforts to modernise infrastructure and improve turnaround times at the terminal.

Once commissioned, the new RTGs will greatly enhance container handling efficiency.

In total, CTCT will receive all 28 RTGs in phases. Nine more units are expected to arrive in August, with the final 10 scheduled for delivery in November. The phased approach allows for smooth integration of the new cranes without disrupting current terminal operations.

The investment comes at a crucial time as the Port of Cape Town continues facing mounting pressure to improve cargo flow, especially during the busy export seasons. These modern RTGs are expected to play a key role in reducing vessel waiting times and improving overall productivity.

Transnet has reaffirmed its commitment to modernising its port infrastructure to support the country’s trade ambitions and economic recovery.
