CCTV footage has emerged showing a terrifying near-miss involving a runaway side tipper truck on the N10 near Cradock, near the same bridge where a similar incident claimed a life in December 2025.
This time, disaster was narrowly avoided.
In the newly surfaced video, the side tipper truck can be seen approaching a bridge while travelling behind another heavy vehicle. As the truck attempts to overtake, the driver appears to hesitate after noticing oncoming traffic and briefly returns to his lane.
Moments later, as soon as the oncoming vehicles pass, the side tipper overtakes again, cutting across in front of another oncoming vehicle. The situation quickly turns critical as it becomes clear that the truck is struggling to slow down.
Crucially, the oncoming motorist senses the danger and reduces speed, creating just enough space for the runaway truck to pass. The truck being overtaken also comes to a stop, allowing the side tipper to squeeze through without making contact.
One small mistake by either driver would have resulted in a catastrophic crash.
The incident brings back sad memories for the community, particularly because it occurred at the same location where a fatal crash took place in December 2025. In that earlier incident, a side tipper truck reportedly lost control while entering Cradock, crossed into oncoming traffic, and collided head-on with a light vehicle. One person was killed on impact, and CCTV footage later showed the truck rolling uncontrollably before the collision.
While no injuries were reported in the latest near-miss, the footage has reignited concerns around brake failure, vehicle maintenance, load control, and speed management on busy routes approaching towns.
Truckers familiar with the N10 say the road leaves little margin for error, especially where heavy vehicles and light traffic mix.
