CCTV footage has revealed the dramatic moments in which a truck driver prevented what could have been a devastating multi-vehicle collision on Bluff Road in Durban after apparently suffering a brake failure this Friday morning.
The incident, captured by a nearby security camera, shows the truck approaching a busy intersection where several vehicles had already stopped at a red traffic light. According to the footage, the driver appears to realise that the truck is no longer able to stop in time.
Faced with the prospect of ploughing into the line of stationary vehicles, the driver makes a split-second decision to steer onto the pavement on the left-hand side of the road in an apparent attempt to avoid a catastrophic rear-end collision.
The CCTV footage shows the truck travelling along the pavement while narrowly missing roadside obstacles before entering the intersection.
As the truck reaches the crossing, another dangerous situation unfolds. Vehicles from the driver’s left had already begun moving through the intersection after receiving a green light. In another quick decision, the truck driver steers sharply to the right, avoiding the crossing traffic by what appears to be only a small margin.
The footage ends with the truck coming to a stop after the evasive manoeuvre without colliding with any of the vehicles waiting at the traffic light or those travelling through the intersection.
While the exact cause of the apparent brake failure has not yet been confirmed, the incident highlights how quickly a mechanical problem can escalate into a life-threatening situation, particularly in heavy urban traffic.
