A truck driver sustained serious injuries after losing control of his Freightliner Argosy on the sharp bends of the R310 Helshoogte Pass in Stellenbosch on Thursday afternoon.
CCTV footage of the crash, shared with SA Trucker, shows the truck approaching the curve at an unsafe speed. The vehicle’s brake lights flash, indicating the driver attempted to slow down, but it was too late.
As the truck takes the bend, the right side of the trailer lifts off the ground, and the container breaks free from its twist locks. The shifting load destabilizes the truck, pulling it down the embankment. A second video captures the wreckage lying in the bushes below.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, where the driver was found with severe injuries. He was stabilized before being transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the crash, with speed and possible mechanical failure being considered as contributing factors.
