New CCTV footage has emerged showing how a high-speed car crash claimed two lives in Durban’s CBD early Friday morning. The footage confirms that excessive speed and a red-light violation likely caused the fatal collision.

The video, recorded at the intersection of Anton Lembede and Stewart Simelane Streets, shows several vehicles, including a truck, starting to move after the traffic light turned green. As they proceed through the intersection, a light motor vehicle is seen speeding from the right-hand side, apparently ignoring its red light.

The car slams into the side of the truck in a violent T-bone impact, leaving the smaller vehicle wedged underneath. Both occupants of the car, believed to be men in their thirties, were killed instantly.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson earlier confirmed that emergency teams found “absolute carnage” at the scene and that the two men were declared dead despite extensive rescue efforts.

Following the release of the footage, truck drivers and motorists have voiced frustration online, saying this incident highlights how many small car drivers fail to respect heavy vehicles and road rules.

“This is what we deal with daily,” one truck driver commented. “People cut in front of trucks or speed through robots without thinking that a loaded rig can’t stop instantly.”

The South African Police Service is still investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.
