New CCTV footage has surfaced showing the terrifying moment a Scania truck towing a side tipper interlink rear-ended another truck on the N10 under the railway bridge in Cradock, heading towards Middelburg.
In the video, the Scania can be seen approaching the bridge at a noticeably higher speed than the truck ahead. As the vehicles move towards the underpass, it appears the Scania driver considers overtaking. The truck briefly edges out, but an oncoming vehicle in the opposite lane forces the driver to abandon the manoeuvre.
He quickly moves back into his lane. By then, it is too late.
With very little distance between the two heavy vehicles and limited room under the bridge, the Scania is unable to brake in time.
The truck ploughs into the rear of the vehicle ahead in a violent impact. Within seconds, flames erupt from the Scania’s cab area, sending thick smoke into the air beneath the railway bridge.
The footage has sparked serious concern among motorists and operators, especially regarding the fate of the Scania driver. It has now been confirmed that the truck driver, Odirile Aron Sedumedi, died in the crash.
