The City of Tshwane has assured motorists and the public that the pillars supporting the President Steyn Bridge in Pretoria are structurally sound, although some tampering with the concrete joint to access the steel has been noted.
This follows a video circulating on social media showing concrete pillars that appear to have been cut, leaving only a small section intact.
Tshwane Transport MMC, Tlangi Mogale, stated that the bridge undergoes regular assessments to ensure its safety.
“As the City of Tshwane, we want to reassure our residents that we have conducted several assessments in the past. These include inspections in 2013, October last year, and the most recent in February this year. During these inspections, engineers assessed the bridge and its pillars and confirmed that they are structurally sound and safe.”
