Container Truck Gets Stuck on Bainskloof Pass After Ignoring Height Restriction

An articulated truck transporting a container has become stuck on the R301 Bainskloof Pass this Thursday morning, once again drawing attention to the strict vehicle height and length restrictions that many drivers continue to ignore.

The truck entered the pass from the R43 side en route to Wellington but ran into trouble near Preekstoel. The route has a clearly marked 3.68-metre height restriction and 9-metre length restriction, imposed due to the pass’s narrow, winding layout and natural obstacles like Dacre’s Rock and other overhanging cliffs.

Emergency services, including four traffic enforcement units, are on their way to the scene. A recovery vehicle from DC Logistics, the operator of the truck, has been mobilised. Authorities have activated a stop-go system between 09h30 and 11h00. Motorists should expect delays and are advised to consider alternative routes.

⚠️ Truckers, Take Note:

This incident is not the first on Bainskloof Pass and likely won’t be the last if truckers keep ignoring the signage. The height and length limits are not suggestions – they’re there for safety. The overhanging rocks and tight curves make it impossible for large trucks to pass safely.

Trying your luck could land you stuck, damaged, delayed, and facing a hefty recovery bill – not to mention blocking a scenic and sensitive route used by local motorists and tourists alike.

If your truck is over 3.68m high or longer than 9m, don’t even think about taking Bainskloof.
