Police carried out a ‘controlled explosion’ at Old Trafford as the game between Manchester United and Bournemouth was abandoned over security fears.
The Sir Alex Ferguson Stand and the Stretford End were evacuated after suspect package was found just before kick-off, and at 16h30 a bomb disposal team carried out the explosion.
The Greater Manchester Police later described the device as “incredibly lifelike” but “not viable”.
The match will be rescheduled, but is unlikely to have any impact on the final League table. Bournemouth are assured of safety, while United will need to overturn a 13-goal difference to beat rivals Manchester City to the final Champions League spot.
