Authorities at the Kosi Bay Port of Entry have made a significant breakthrough in the fight against cross-border smuggling after seizing a massive consignment of counterfeit goods worth more than R2.8 million. Two Mozambican nationals were arrested during the operation on Monday, 22 September 2025, after Border Management Authority (BMA) officers intercepted their truck as it attempted to enter South Africa.
The truck driver and his assistant initially tried to mislead officials by claiming they were transporting cooking pots and towels. However, a detailed inspection quickly revealed the real cargo — a stash of counterfeit goods hidden inside the truck. Among the seized items were 100 boxes of Afzal hookah pipe flavours, hundreds of branded sneakers from global labels such as Adidas, Nike, and New Balance, more than 1 000 pairs of Nike sandals, and Louis Vuitton belts. SAPS later confirmed that all the products were counterfeit.
Both suspects were detained at Manguzi SAPS and are facing charges under the Counterfeit Goods Act 37 of 1997 and the Tobacco Products Control Act 83 of 1993.
BMA Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato praised the officers for their vigilance, saying the latest bust reflects the agency’s commitment to protecting South Africa’s borders from criminal networks.

“These counterfeit products not only undermine legitimate businesses and reduce tax revenue but also pose safety risks to consumers,” said Masiapato. “The arrests at Kosi Bay show that our officers remain alert and ready to enforce the law.”
The seizure forms part of the BMA’s broader crackdown on illicit trade. Between April and June 2025, authorities confiscated counterfeit clothing and footwear valued at more than R1 million at Lebombo and Kosi Bay, along with illegal cigarettes worth over R1.1 million seized at Van Rooyen, Lebombo, and Caledonspoort ports.
Masiapato added that the BMA will continue to work closely with the SAPS, SANDF, and SARS to dismantle smuggling networks and safeguard the country’s economy.
