Dashcam Captures Lowbed Driver Lose Trailer After Reckless Overtake on Narrow R544

A shocking incident on the R544 has once again highlighted the risks of impatience behind the wheel, especially when operating abnormal loads.

In a video captured from an onboard camera earlier, a lowbed truck driver is seen tailgating another heavy vehicle before attempting to overtake on a narrow stretch of road marked with a continuous white line. The manoeuvre quickly goes wrong.

Abnormal load drivers are generally expected to be among the most cautious on the road. Unlike standard rigs, these trucks do not fit neatly within lane widths, which makes overtaking a serious decision that requires planning, space, and patience. In most cases, they simply cannot afford to rush.

But in this case, the driver appeared to ignore those basics.

As the truck moves out to overtake, the width of the lowbed trailer becomes a problem almost immediately. With very little room to work with, the trailer strikes the roadside barriers. The impact causes the trailer to detach, bringing the dangerous manoeuvre to an abrupt end.

The footage clearly shows the driver’s earlier behaviour, sitting too close behind the truck in front before making the risky move. It is a reminder that tailgating often leads to poor judgement calls, especially under pressure.

Fortunately, no other vehicles were directly caught up in the incident, and no injuries have been reported. However, the situation could have turned far worse if the driver had lost full control of the rig or if oncoming traffic had been present.

For operators running lowbeds and other abnormal loads, this incident serves as a hard lesson. These rigs demand respect, patience, and proper road awareness at all times.
