A dashcam has captured the frightening moment a distracted driver crashed into a group of wildebeests after apparently taking their eyes off the road to look at a cellphone.
The incident unfolded on an unnamed road as a confusion of wildebeests suddenly darted across the driver’s path. By the time the driver looked up, there was little time to react. Despite braking, the vehicle collided with several of the animals.
The footage is another stark reminder of how quickly a few seconds of distraction can end in disaster.
Whether you’re driving through the countryside or along a busy highway, hazards can appear without warning. Livestock, wildlife, pedestrians, broken-down vehicles and sudden traffic queues all demand a driver’s full attention.
Regular followers of SA Trucker may remember another dashcam video we shared involving a truck driver who repeatedly divided his attention between the road and his cellphone. We said then that when you try to split your attention between driving and your phone, the cellphone always wins.
This latest crash proves that point once again.
Looking away for even a second can be enough to miss a vehicle braking, a child crossing the road or, as seen here, wildlife unexpectedly running across the roadway. By the time your eyes return to the road, the chance to avoid a collision may already be gone.
Beyond the damage to a vehicle, distracted driving can cost lives and cause unnecessary suffering to both people and animals. No message, notification or social media update is worth that risk.
SA Trucker urges all motorists and professional drivers to keep their hands off their cellphones while driving. If a call or message cannot wait, pull over at a safe location before using your device.
Remember: when you try to share your attention between the road and your cellphone, the cellphone will always win—and the consequences are often paid for by someone else.
