A truck dashcam has captured a frightening near miss along the N1 National Route near Trompsburg, where two heavy vehicles narrowly avoided a head-on collision in the early hours of the morning.
The footage shows a truck travelling steadily at around 82km/h when the driver suddenly spots an oncoming truck directly ahead in his lane. The situation escalates within seconds, leaving almost no time to react.
According to the dashcam timestamp, the incident occurred at approximately 06h04. Location data from the video places it along the N1 corridor near Trompsburg, a key freight route used daily by long-haul trucks moving between the Free State and the Northern Cape.
What makes the situation even more dangerous is that the roadway provides two lanes for the opposing direction, yet the oncoming truck is clearly positioned in the wrong lane, directly in the path of the recording vehicle. The setup creates a high-risk scenario for a possible head-on impact between two heavy-duty rigs.
With closing speed building quickly, the recording truck driver reacts instantly. Without hesitation, he steers onto the left shoulder of the road, using every bit of available space to avoid impact. The two trucks pass each other safely, missing what could easily have been a severe or fatal collision by only moments.
The driver’s awareness and quick decision-making proved critical. Had the hazard been noticed even a second or two later, the outcome could have been catastrophic given the size and momentum of both vehicles involved.
While the cause of the oncoming truck’s positioning remains unknown, the footage highlights the constant risks faced on long-distance routes like the N1, where fatigue, misjudgement, or distraction can quickly turn routine driving into a life-threatening situation.
This near miss serves as a strong reminder for heavy vehicle operators to maintain full situational awareness at all times, especially during early morning hours when visibility is still low and reaction time becomes everything.
In this case, one decisive manoeuvre prevented what could have been a major road tragedy on one of South Africa’s busiest freight corridors.
