A dashcam video has emerged, capturing the moment a light motor vehicle collided with a truck, followed by a second car on the N1 yesterday, January 7, 2025, approximately 7km from Edenburg to Trompsburg.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that a car travelling from Cape Town to Welkom appeared to lose control, veering into the path of the truck heading from Gauteng to Cape Town.
After the initial impact, the out-of-control car collided with another car travelling from Lady Grey to Germiston.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded swiftly to the chaotic scene, working tirelessly to assist the injured.
Seven patients were transported to Albert Nzula Hospital for stabilization. Two other individuals declined hospital transportation after signing refusal-of-treatment forms.

The collision caused extensive road obstructions, forcing the closure of the N1 for several hours. Authorities redirected motorists to alternative routes via the bridge off-ramp to ease traffic congestion.
The South African Police Service and the Free State Department of Health were also present, coordinating efforts to manage the aftermath and investigate the incident.
