Dashcam Footage Captures Rear-End Truck Collision on the N3 Near Wembezi

Dashcam footage has surfaced shedding light on how a rear-end collision between a side tipper truck and a container truck unfolded on the N3 Johannesburg-bound near Wembezi, outside Estcourt, on Wednesday morning.

The video, filmed from a vehicle travelling behind the two trucks, shows the container truck attempting to change lanes to the right, seemingly to overtake the side tipper ahead. As the manoeuvre unfolds, things go pear-shaped. The container truck closes the gap too quickly and ends up crashing into the rear of the side tipper, sending debris across the lane and forcing traffic to slow sharply.

Fortunately, the driver involved was lucky and escaped with only minor injuries. No serious injuries or fatalities were reported, which, given the size and weight of the vehicles involved, is nothing short of a blessing in trucking terms.

What remains unclear is exactly what caused the collision. From the footage alone, it is difficult to determine whether the container truck driver misjudged the speed of the side tipper, underestimated the stopping distance, or simply spotted the truck ahead too late. The angle and distance captured by the dashcam leave room for multiple interpretations.
