A shocking dashcam video has emerged from the R31 between Vergenoeg and Hotazel, showing how quickly disaster strikes when road rules are ignored.
The footage, recorded on Thursday, captures a bakkie disregarding a stop sign and pulling out directly in front of an oncoming truck. The truck collides with the bakkie and, unable to regain control, veers off the road before crashing into the bush on the right-hand side.
Both vehicles were left badly damaged, and at the time of writing, there was no official confirmation of casualties or injuries.
This kind of crash is not an isolated incident on the R31 or in the Northern Cape. SA Trucker has previously reported on several similar accidents.
In April 2025, dashcam footage showed a truck overturning near Barkley West after a car suddenly swerved into its path.
In another incident, a truck driver lost his life in a two side-tipper collision on the R31 after another motorist failed to yield at an intersection. These incidents paint a worrying picture of how often dangerous driving decisions end up costing lives and livelihoods.
For truckers who spend their days on long, open stretches of road, the message is clear: stop signs are not suggestions. A moment’s negligence from one driver can force another into a life-threatening situation.
Dashcams, while not preventing accidents, continue to play an important role in showing the public and authorities just how quickly things can go wrong. Until road discipline improves and enforcement becomes consistent, drivers will need to remain vigilant, anticipating mistakes from others and keeping enough space and speed to react when the unexpected happens.
The latest R31 crash is a reminder that every stop sign matters, and ignoring it doesn’t just risk your own life – it puts everyone else on the road in danger.
