Dashcam Footage Shows How a Split-Second Decision Turned Deadly on SA Roads

A chilling dashcam video from the night of 18 October 2025 is making rounds online showing a serious and likely fatal crash involving two heavy-duty trucks and a small car. The exact location of the accident is not yet known but the footage paints a clear picture of how one reckless overtake can turn deadly in seconds.

In the video, recorded from one of the trucks involved, the driver can be seen cruising steadily at around 84 km/h when a car suddenly begins to overtake. From the trucker’s view another set of headlights can already be seen approaching from the oncoming lane.

Realising the danger ahead, the trucker immediately lifts his foot off the pedal, dropping speed to below 70 km/h, a textbook example of defensive driving.

Sadly, even that wasn’t enough. The car collides head-on with the oncoming truck and is violently flung back into the path of the recording truck, which has no time or space to avoid impact. The crash that follows is devastating, with metal, glass and debris scattering across the road as both trucks grind to a halt.

At this stage it’s not yet confirmed whether there were any fatalities, but judging from the extent of the damage, the outcome looks grim.

What stands out in this footage is how misleading appearances can be in crash scenes. Without dashcam evidence, the wreckage of the small car would easily make it seem like the truckers were at fault.

In reality, both truck drivers did everything right by slowing down, maintaining distance and even allowing room for the car to pull back. Unfortunately, the motorist didn’t take the opportunity.

This video serves as a harsh reminder that truckers aren’t always the villains in road accidents. Sometimes, despite doing everything right, they still end up being part of someone else’s mistake.
