New dashcam footage has surfaced showing the moments before a serious collision between a log-carrying truck and a 22-seater minibus taxi on the N2 near KwaMsane, Mtubatuba, on Wednesday.
The footage appears to show the minibus taxi travelling behind a car before suddenly moving across the roadway and into the path of the oncoming truck.
From the footage, it appears the taxi may have been attempting to avoid a collision with the car ahead of it, before entering the truck’s path. The truck can be seen approaching in the opposite direction, leaving little time for the heavy vehicle to react.
The taxi and truck then collide, with the impact causing significant damage to both vehicles.
Eleven people were injured in the crash, according to reports from the scene. Emergency services attended to the injured while debris was cleared from the N2.
The crash caused severe traffic congestion on the national route as emergency crews worked at the scene.
The newly surfaced dashcam footage provides additional visual context around how the collision unfolded, but it does not establish why the taxi moved into the truck’s path. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain subject to investigation.
The incident occurred just days after another devastating crash on the N2 near Mtubatuba.
In the early hours of Sunday, 11 people were killed and several others seriously injured when a minibus taxi and a heavy motor vehicle collided near Mtubatuba. The taxi caught fire after the impact.
The two serious crashes within days have again highlighted the dangers faced by truck drivers, taxi passengers and other motorists using the busy N2 corridor through northern KwaZulu-Natal.
