New dashcam footage has surfaced showing the terrifying moments a runaway truck caused the massive multi-vehicle crash inside the Waterval Boven Tunnel on the N4.
The footage, captured by a truck that was already stationary in traffic inside the tunnel, shows vehicles backed up when a truck suddenly barrels into the queue at high speed. Within seconds, the runaway truck violently ploughs into several cars, pushing them forward in a chain reaction crash before finally coming to a rest.
The impact inside the confined tunnel space appears devastating, with debris flying and vehicles being crushed against one another. The truck from which the footage was recorded was among the vehicles struck in the pile-up.
Earlier reports confirmed that the N4 was completely closed following a head-on collision involving two trucks and multiple light motor vehicles inside the tunnel. It is now believed that brake failure may have played a role, although authorities have not yet officially confirmed the cause.
Emergency services responded swiftly, with paramedics, fire and rescue teams working inside the tunnel to assist the injured and clear the wreckage. The extent of injuries has not yet been fully disclosed.
