The public is being urged to help locate 34 tonnes of stolen sugar and superlink trailers after a daring hijacking on the N2 between Pongola and Piet Retief on 10 October 2024.
Faces of the hijackers, captured on the truck’s dashcam, can be seen in the video attached.
According to the truck’s owner, his flatbed truck was targeted by a group of hijackers who employed a calculated method. They jumped onto the trailer, disabled the air pipes, and forced the truck to a stop.
The truck driver, realizing he was being hijacked, jumped out and tried to flee, but was chased down by the hijackers. A Toyota Fortuner was used to intercept him after one of the hijackers failed to catch him on foot.
The 34-ton load of sugar and the trailer were stolen, with the truck’s horse later found abandoned in Ermelo around 10 pm.
Despite the hijacking, the criminals did not jam the truck’s tracking device, which allowed it to be traced to Ermelo at 18h44.
The front-facing camera also continued to record until the truck was abandoned, with the driver’s keys and documents still inside.
The suspects can be heard communicating in a foreign language as they go.

Two of the hijackers remained with the driver in the bush until 9pm before fleeing.
The Mahamba Police Station is investigating the case under Case number 10/10/2024. Truckers are advised to be extremely cautious on this stretch of road.

Anyone with information or who may recognize the hijackers in the footage is urged to contact SAPS 10111 or Constable Jonase on 017 826 9970.
