The Durban Container Terminal (DCT) Pier 2 has received the first batch of 20 diesel-electric straddle carriers, marking a significant milestone in its fleet renewal and recovery plan.
In a statement, DCT revealed that four of the new straddle carriers are set for assembly and commissioning onsite. They are expected to undergo endurance testing by the end of December and will be fully operational by mid-January 2025.
This delivery, valued at over R440 million, is part of a broader initiative to modernize DCT Pier 2’s operations. By the end of May 2025, all 20 units will be fully integrated into terminal activities.
“This delivery marks a crucial investment in the future of DCT Pier 2 and a major step forward in enhancing our operational efficiency,” said Earle Peters, Durban Terminals managing executive. “The addition of these modern, diesel-electric straddle carriers will greatly improve container handling capabilities and foster recovery.”

The straddle carriers, manufactured by Konecranes Noells, were shipped as components aboard the MSC Carole from Würzburg, Germany, five weeks ago. These components will be assembled at the terminal before undergoing rigorous testing.
Straddle carriers are essential to DCT Pier 2’s operations, offering precision and speed in loading and unloading containers from vessels. This investment follows earlier upgrades to the terminal’s fleet, including the acquisition of haulers and reach stackers earlier this year.
With this strategic addition to its equipment lineup, DCT Pier 2 is positioning itself to meet growing demands while improving efficiency and reliability in the region’s container handling operations.
