The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has issued an urgent traffic advisory following a fatal crash on the N1 North freeway this morning.
The accident, involving a single minibus taxi, occurred between the Buccleuch Interchange and Allandale Road in Midrand. According to JMPD, the taxi overturned, leaving multiple injured and at least five people confirmed dead.
Emergency services, including paramedics and law enforcement, are currently on the scene. The far-right lane is already blocked, and authorities have warned that a full freeway closure will soon be required to allow for investigations and recovery operations.

Traffic is already heavily backed up in both directions, with major delays expected. Motorists are urged to avoid the N1 North and instead use alternative routes until the road has been cleared.
JMPD has called on drivers to remain patient, obey instructions from officers, and exercise extra caution in the area.
💡 Alternative routes suggested: Use Old Pretoria Road or the R55 as detours to bypass Midrand.
