Deceased Truck Driver Identified as Police Probe Fatal Shooting in Bushbuckridge

Police in Bushbuckridge have identified the truck driver who was shot and killed at Dwarsloop along the R40 road earlier this week, as investigations into the brutal murder continue.

According to South African Police Service, the deceased has been identified as Mr Scelo Sphephelo Nxumalo, aged 41, who was driving the truck at the time of the incident.

Police say that on Tuesday night, 6 January 2026, at approximately 23h40, officers received a complaint about a truck that was suspiciously and incorrectly parked at Dwarsloop. Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered a man lying on the ground outside the truck with a gunshot wound to the head.

Emergency medical services were immediately summoned, but the victim was declared dead at the scene.

The owner of the truck was later contacted and travelled to the scene, where he positively identified the deceased as the driver, Mr Nxumalo. At this stage, the motive for the murder remains unknown, and no arrests have been made.

Police have confirmed that the truck involved is fitted with onboard cameras. Footage from these cameras has been secured and now forms a critical part of the ongoing investigation. Investigators are hopeful that the video evidence may assist in identifying the suspect or suspects involved in the killing.

The murder has once again raised serious concerns around the safety of truck drivers, particularly those travelling at night and stopping along major routes.

Police are appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, noticed suspicious activity in the area, or who recognises a person of interest linked to the case is urged to come forward.

Information can be reported to the investigating officer, Detective Lieutenant Colonel Cindy Mkhabela, on 082 469 1298, the Crime Stop number 08600 10111, or via the MySAPS App. All information will be treated as confidential, and callers may remain anonymous.

Investigations are ongoing.
