Police in Delmas have scored a major win against organised crime after arresting a 43-year-old Eswatini national caught transporting illicit cigarettes worth an estimated R17.4 million.

The arrest took place on Friday night, 05 December 2025, at around 22:00 in Sundra. Acting on intelligence about suspicious cigarette transportation disguised as water tank deliveries, Sundra Police Station officers teamed up with private security companies to track down the suspect vehicle.

Authorities successfully intercepted a truck hauling two trailers along the route. On inspection, they uncovered a sophisticated smuggling method — twelve 5 000-litre water tanks packed to the brim with boxes of illicit cigarettes from various brands, neatly stacked into 25 pallets.

The driver, believed to be part of a wider smuggling network, was detained on the spot. Police say the seizure is a significant blow to syndicates moving illegal tobacco products through Mpumalanga and beyond.

Authorities have commended the coordinated work between police and private security partners, saying more operations of this nature are underway to clamp down on criminal supply chains exploiting South African borders and freight corridors.
