The South African trucking industry is mourning the loss of one of its most respected pioneers following the passing of Derick Reinhardt, founder of Reinhardt Transport Group. Reinhardt, who built the company from a single truck into one of the country’s leading transport and logistics businesses, passed away peacefully on 1 June 2026 at the age of 73.
His death marks the end of an era for a company that has become a household name in South African road freight and for an industry that benefited from his leadership, vision and unwavering commitment to doing business the right way.
Among those paying tribute is FleetWatch Magazine editor Patrick O’Leary, who described Reinhardt’s passing in simple but powerful words: “A giant has fallen.”
“The news came through early yesterday morning that Derick Reinhardt, founder of Reinhardt Transport, passed away peacefully on June 1st. It hit like a gut-punch,” O’Leary wrote.
Having watched Reinhardt’s journey over many years, O’Leary recalled how the businessman transformed a one-truck operation into a transport powerhouse while remaining grounded and approachable.
“I remember spending wonderful times with this great man watching him take the company from a one-truck show to a giant in the trucking industry,” he said.
From One Truck to an Industry Giant
When Reinhardt founded the business in 1982, few could have predicted the impact it would have on South Africa’s transport sector.
Over the next four decades, Reinhardt Transport Group grew into one of the country’s most recognised freight and logistics operations, serving customers across multiple industries and creating employment opportunities for hundreds of South Africans.
In a statement announcing his passing, the company credited its founder’s courage, entrepreneurial spirit and vision for making that growth possible.
“Without Mr Reinhardt’s courage, entrepreneurial spirit and vision, Reinhardt Transport would not exist,” the company said.
“As the visionary who started the business in 1982, he did not just build a company, he built a community and laid the foundation for everything we do today.”
The company said Reinhardt’s passion, guidance and dedication helped shape its culture and inspired everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him.
A Leader Who Never Forgot His Roots
While Reinhardt became one of the most recognised figures in South African transport, those who knew him best say success never changed him.
“As his company grew, so too did his stature in the trucking industry but never, and I mean never, did he let his status go to his head,” O’Leary wrote.
“Never, ever, did he forget his roots.”
He described Reinhardt as a transporter, entrepreneur and visionary, but said his greatest quality was his character.
“He was a gentleman.”
O’Leary also recalled a supplier’s description of Reinhardt’s approach to business.

“Look, Derick wants a good deal but never at our expense. It’s always a win-win deal with him.”
The comment reflects a reputation Reinhardt earned throughout his career as someone who valued long-term relationships and mutual respect over short-term gains.
Tributes Continue to Pour In
As news of his passing spread through the transport community, tributes began flowing from colleagues, friends, suppliers and industry stakeholders who had crossed paths with Reinhardt over the years.
For many, he represented more than a successful businessman. He was a mentor, an industry leader and an example of how humility and integrity can coexist with commercial success.
In his farewell tribute, O’Leary summed up the feelings of many across the industry.
“There is a saying: ‘I like to leave people a little richer in spirit for knowing me.’
“Derick, you have left us all millionaires in spirit for knowing you.”
A Legacy That Will Endure
Reinhardt Transport Group said it will honour its founder’s memory by continuing to uphold the values and vision he instilled in the organisation.
“While we mourn this immense loss, we also celebrate the extraordinary legacy Mr Reinhardt leaves behind,” the company said.
The company has asked that the Reinhardt family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time.
While Derick Reinhardt will be remembered for building one of South Africa’s leading transport companies, those closest to him say his true legacy lies in the lives he touched, the relationships he built and the example he set for future generations of transport operators.
His influence on South African road freight will continue long after his passing.
