DHL Eyes Takeover of 3 South African Logistics Companies in Big Expansion Drive

Global logistics heavyweight DHL is making serious moves to expand its footprint in South Africa, with a set of local acquisitions now moving closer to final approval.

The Competition Commission has given the green light for DHL to acquire three companies linked to the Vital Group, namely Vital Distribution, Vital Fleet, and Staffing Logistics. The deal still needs the final nod from the Competition Tribunal before it can be fully implemented.

According to the Commission, the transaction is not expected to disrupt competition in the local logistics market, nor does it raise any public interest concerns. That effectively clears the biggest regulatory hurdle for the deal.

Building a Bigger Logistics Machine

The three companies bring different strengths to the table. Vital Distribution focuses on transport, warehousing, and distribution across key sectors like retail and manufacturing. Vital Fleet runs a range of vehicles, from light delivery vans to heavy long-haul trucks, while Staffing Logistics provides manpower solutions across a wide national footprint.

For DHL, this is not just about adding trucks and depots. It is about tightening control over the full logistics chain, from workforce to wheels.

Africa in the Spotlight

This move forms part of DHL’s broader strategy to scale up across Africa. The company previously announced a multi-billion rand investment into its African operations, signalling long-term confidence in the region.

Executives have pointed to steady growth in trade across Sub-Saharan Africa, with demand rising for more reliable and efficient logistics services. Businesses are increasingly looking for partners that can handle complex supply chains while keeping delivery times predictable.

What It Means for the Industry

For local operators, especially smaller fleets, this could mean tougher competition from a well-resourced global player with deeper pockets and integrated systems.

But at the same time, it also highlights something many in the industry already know, Africa’s logistics sector is growing fast, and the big players are positioning themselves early.
