Diesel Sees Biggest Drop in September Fuel Price Adjustment

The Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has confirmed the official fuel price adjustments that will take effect from Wednesday, 3 September 2025.

Motorists will see small cuts to petrol, while diesel and LPG users benefit from much bigger decreases. This comes after global oil prices softened in August and the rand held firm despite the impact of newly introduced tariffs.

Global factors at play

Oil markets came under pressure in August as OPEC+ boosted production and global demand slowed on the back of weaker economic growth prospects. At the same time, the ongoing trade war with the US weighed on sentiment, but the rand managed to remain resilient, averaging between R17.50 and R17.80/$.

The average Brent Crude oil price dropped from $69.06 to $67.01 per barrel, pulling down international fuel prices. This translated into over-recoveries on both petrol and diesel, with diesel seeing the bigger benefit.

Industry context

The department said the slate levy remains unchanged at zero cents per litre, with a positive balance of R3.26 billion recorded at the end of July.

While the cuts offer relief to consumers, analysts warn that volatility in global oil markets and trade disputes could still drive fluctuations in coming months.
