Disaster Teams Activated as Snow and Heavy Rainfall Predicted in KZN

Durban – KwaZulu-Natal is bracing for a cold front that could bring heavy rainfall and possible snowfall across parts of the province.

This comes after a weather alert issued by the South African Weather Services, warning of a sharp drop in temperatures.

MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, has swiftly activated teams from both departments to be on high alert and ready to respond to any emergencies.

While it’s not expected that KZN will be blanketed in snow, the MEC urged motorists to stay alert, keep an eye on weather updates, and drive cautiously.

“Our Road Traffic Inspectorate is already on standby and will monitor the situation closely, especially on high-risk routes,” said Duma during a press briefing at Inkosi Mhlabunzima Maphumulo House.

Key routes under watch include the N3 between Harrismith and Mooi River, R617 between Kokstad and Underberg, and parts of the N2 near Ingeli.

These stretches are notorious for becoming dangerous during icy conditions.

In coordination with N3 Toll Concession, possible road closures and escorts for trucks may be implemented to avoid congestion.

Duma also confirmed that over 10 motor graders have been deployed to priority routes to clear any snow buildup quickly.

“We’re responding with speed and urgency,” he said.

On the Human Settlements front, roving emergency teams are liaising with national structures to assist families that may be affected by flooding or snowfall. Plans are in place to deploy Temporary Residential Units and relocate at-risk families, if needed.

“This sudden change from a 30°C heatwave to possible snow just shows how unpredictable climate change has become,” said Duma.

Motorists and residents are advised to follow updates from official channels as the weather system approaches.
